Objective: creating a relaxed atmosphere where the audience can ‘be present’
Summary: the audience has to estimate 1 minute of clock time
Duration: 2 minutes
Number of participants: unlimited
Description of the exercise:
Ask everybody to stand up. Explain that the participants have to estimate one minute of clock time in silence. The challenge is that they can’t count numbers so they have to ‘experience’ the duration of a minute. When you feel that one minute has passed then you can open your eyes again and sit down (very silently). Count down from three, and at zero the minute starts.
Make sure that you have a stopwatch ready. You will notice that the first person will sit down after 30 seconds and there’s a good chance that some people will still be standing after two minutes. After two minutes you stop the exercise and tell how much time it took for the first person to sit down, and the last person. This shows that it is quite hard to be conscious of the clock time (without counting or our clocks) and it helps to let people arrive into the ‘present.’
